What was the Air France A350 Incident?

Based on the reports, Flight AF136 departed at 12:49 on June 28, 2025 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG). The aircraft was scheduled to land at Chicago O’Hare (ORD), but sadly it took a U-turn from where it took-off.

When the flight reached somewhere around Iceland and Greenland over the Atlantic, the crew reversed and headed back to Paris. While the Air France flight AF136 safely landed at CDG approximately over 6 hours and 37 minutes after the departure time.

The aircraft was above 38,000 feet when it was declared to take the turn, causing the passengers in trouble and stress on what can happen next.

Why did the Flight Return?

The crew mentioned operational reasons for the Paris to Chicago flight return, but there were speculations regarding the cause. Based on the passengers and reliable tracking sources, the aircraft was denied landing at Chicago O’Hare.

Several reports hinted at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection procedures where the airline must take landing permissions at least before 24 hours. Additionally, the flights must enter within 15 minutes, and any misses to do so, the clearance will be invalidated.

However, till date, the concrete reason, whether it was an aircraft registration issue or a paperwork error, hasn’t been declared by the officials. The statement  from Air France didn’t provide any detailed explanation on this matter.

How the Passengers Reacted to the Sudden Return?

After spending about seven hours in the air, they were frustrated as their time was wasted and had missed US connections. Even a few passengers expressed that the airline had provided a clear and actual reason, instead of just saying “operational issues”.

However, the safe landing brought a relief at the safe return to many, but some criticized Air France for sorting out the issue before the departure.

On this matter, many people speculated and commented differently, like:

“It was a new A350 that Air France hadn’t added to their ops sheet with the US yet. Ultimately a clerical error… without that tail number on the approved ops sheet it can’t legally fly to the US hence the turnaround.”

However, the airline didn’t confirm anything then and yet to the Air France flight AF136 return.

What Air France Did for Passengers After the Return?

Besides the safe landing, the airline arranged overnight accommodation near the airport for the affected passengers. Additionally, they provided standard care, including meal vouchers and transport assistance between the accommodation and the airport.
